A bigger picture

We are back from our early weekend vacation. One of the things that we got to do as we spent a few days without kids was seeing an “adult film”. Since we had some passes from the Wall-E hard drive crash, we went to see The Dark Knight. After watch an unbelivable 27 minutes of previews the feature film finally began. If you haven’t seen the latest installment in the much improved Batman series I highly recommend it. Speaking of the improvements have you noticed how much bigger Gotham is in the last two movies? It finally seems like the major metropolis that it should be. I also noticed (ok I didn’t my wife did) the Illinois[e] license plates, I always thought Gotham was New York but Chicago makes much more sense. But really it is nice to finally have a batman series that shows the town on the proper scale.
But speaking of seeing the big picture, I think the latest movie has to be seen in the context of the series. Don’t take me wrong, the movie holds its own but if you don’t want to walk out wondering if you are compromising your moral compass you have to view the film as part of a larger picture, or in the words of Harvey Dent, “It is always darkest just before the dawn”. I think the film really shows the same lesson of other great film series such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Star Wars. Sometimes the temporary truth of a situation would do more harm than allowing people to believe what they want or need to believe in order for the greater good to be accomplished, basically losing a battlle in order to win a war.
