Episode 52 of the Catalyst Podcast has a great interview with Erwin McManus. During the interview Erwin spoke about the difference between being creative and being an artist. I wrote down a good portion of what he said and have it below. But go listen to the entire interview for yourself.
Erwin’s main point is that we are all creative, being made by and in the image of a creator. We are not all artists, artists are creative but being creative does not make one an artist. In light of that fact, the church has not been a place that has encouraged creative people and that needs to change. At least that is what I head Erwin saying.
There is a difference between a person; a creative and an artist. Everyone is creative, is part of our basic world view at Mosaic but not everyone is artistic in that sense. Not everyone is a painter or a dancer.
We are talking about unleashing human creativity. You ask do we put art on the walls? Well we don’t put art on the walls. We let people paint during services but that’s really not what we are talking about. We have doctors that go throughout the year that go into under-served underprivileged parts of the world, who take humanitarian gifts down there, dentists and medical teams…
We consider that a creative act. When people organize and administrate and when people use their gifts of mercy and service alll of that is creative. And so if we can begin to realize that art becomes a metaphor for artistry for creativity. And if we can begin to believe that every human being is creative… We will begin to see a lot more happen from the church.
If you begin to nurture a value for creativity then you will discover that artists will be drawn to your [church]. The reason we don’t have many dancers and painters and film makers and writers in the church is because the church has for so long has basically told them they have no value here you have no place here. And once the church becomes a place for everyone’s creative expression you will being to have people that you have never imagined.

You have probably seen the news today that George Carlin died. I couldn’t find a clip of his standup that I felt comfortable having on my blog so here is one of my favorites of the many roles he filled.

unfortunately, based upon his own commentary I think it can be said that he is not in a better place.
For over a year now I haven’t been using the most popular drug in America… C8H10N4O2
However after seeing a news story this morning I am thinking I will swing by and buy something.
A Christian group out of San Diego has found grounds for outrage over the new logo for Starbucks Coffee. The “naked woman” on the logo is “extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves, Slutbucks,” the group’s founder says.

Are you kidding me!? No wonder the world looks at Christians as a bunch of looneys. We keep giving supporting evidence.
I’m sorry but I don’t think Jesus is concerned about a company logo, and if there is someone out there that is getting off via the new/old starbucks logo they have much bigger problems.
Now if you want to make a legitimate reason for skipping the Starbucks in the morning, lets talk about consumerism and how we will spend $4 for a cup of coffee but bitch that we have to pay $4 for a gallon of gas. Just to put that in perspective… A typical latte costs $3.59 for 16 oz…that’s .22 cents per ounce or $28.72 a gallon!
I think I have mentioned before how we have been watching Intervention on A&E. It is just amazing to me to see these people who’s lives have been just ruined by their addictions. What is more upsetting is to see the updates that they close the show with and how some of the featured people go back to an addiction even after drug treatment. But when I think about it, I really don’t have any room or space to be critical. (this will be a jump) Kinda like how we read about Israel and how they were on again off again with God and wonder why they just weren’t more consistent - because we would have been. Of course we are only fooling our selves with that kinda of attitude. How many of us, no matter what it is, fail to do what we know we should do simply because continuing to do what we are doing is easier.
I saw a headline this morning that Delta is again in talks to merge with another airline. With a major Delta hub in our area every time these discussions pick up there is a good deal of local talk about the possible impact on our local economy. I hope that any change by Delta would result in cheap flights out of Cincinnati. If I recall correctly Cincinnati was recently named the most expensive (or one of the top 5) airport in the country. You know when you can drive an hour north, instead of south, and save $100s just by flying out of Dayton rather than Cincinnati (which then flies to Cincinnati to pick up people there) it is just silly.
