roughing it

When I was about six years old we were cleaning out a closet at home and we came across my Dad’s canvas tent that he had when he was in the Army. We set it up in the back yard to allow it to air out and we even slept in it one night. Granted we were just in the backyard but a few years later when I was in my early teens we did do some old fashion camping. Cooking over a campfire, sleeping on the hard ground in a three person tent. I didn’t really enjoy it at the time but it is a fond memory now. I can’t even imagine trying to do that now with four kids. My idea of roughing it now is staying in a hotel – sad? yes. I’m a lightweight.

i gotta go

Our 2 year old occasionally has this habit of removing his pullup and going buff for a while. This hasn’t helped us get him potty trained and while I don’t think we need to consider incontinence supplies (we haven’t given up hope yet). However we may sound like it given that we are almost constantly asking, do you have to go potty. I don’t remember it taking this long with the others but each one is different.

With all the tools and cables that I carry back and forth to work, church and home every day/week. It is good to have reliable tool storage and when carrying stuff in and out constantly it is important to have things securely closed. Currently I have a small leather case that I keep a couple of screw drivers of various sizes, a flashlight, and a utility knife. For more detailed applications I also carry a small toolbox that has a variety of cables, adapters, screwdriver heads and sockets, a collection of pens and markers and a couple different kinds of tape. Oh yeah, there is also a cable tester, a solder iron, a voltage meter and a couple different sizes of tie straps.

I just saw a promo spot on Fox for the new season of American Idol that will be starting soon. The backing music for the spot (which was 90% of the content) was “Rise” by Robbie Seay Band. To quote a local pastor, “How Cool Is That!?”

Just a couple of years ago I saw these guys at our church tribe’s campgrounds where RSB performed for the first Young Adult Camp (I was in denial that I was still young).

Almost two years ago we started remodeling our upstairs bathroom. Took 4/5 of one wall down to the studs and added some insulation, properly closed up the window that was covered by the shower wall, replaced the tub and shower, replaced the toilet and put in a new sink with a counter top. My FIL and I worked on it while I was off work for a week of vacation. We had a few challenges with the plumbing fixtures but everything got working in under a week or so and we got the new tile floor in and have a functioning bathroom. Now, two years later we still need to figure out what to do with the walls.

Speaking of Jamie Lynn Spears I wonder if she will consider any amby baby products for when the little one arrives. The Amby Baby Hammock is a motion bed that simulates a womb like environment – I guess a hammock does kinda give a floating sensation. They make a good point, given the significant amount of time that babies spend sleeping their first year I guess choosing their bed is a big deal. I know how much I like the bed that I have now – Select Comfort ROCKS!

So Lynne Spears was planning on releasing a book titled, ‘Pop Culture Mom: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World’. It was described as “a parenting book that’s going to have faith elements to it” and was due out in time for Mother’s Day in the US in May. However the release of the book has now been postponed indefinitely by the publisher. I guess having one daughter in and out of drug rehab and now another daughter (who is 16) announcing that she is pregnant by her 19 year old live-in boyfriend (can we say statutory rape? – actually after reading a couple of articles this morning he is looking at possibly 10 years if they were in Louisiana).
I really hope this family can get it together. As someone who had a baby on the way before the wedding day (hey that rhymes) I know how difficult things can be but that by the grace of God they can work out too. But then again I don’t think I need to be writing any books on parenting either.

hard work requires hard play

We had a mandatory on site meeting this morning for our project team. Rather than going over project plans or other business performance management our client just wanted to say thanks for all our hard work over this last year. We had some coffee cake and some regular Starbucks coffee – I had about a shoot glass worth and I am still jittery some 2 hours later. And we were all given gift cards to a big box electronics store. I think I will be swinging by and picking up a new game for the Wii.

One of the challenges of the holiday season is finding room for visiting relatives to sleep. If you are blessed to have a guest room I am sure that you have gotten it cleaned out and prepared for over night guests. However, at least in our family, we also have to make accommodations for our furry relatives – I am not saying that one needs to run out and purchase a cat bed or kitty hotel but you do have to consider where you keep the critters. Just like I wouldn’t want some of my family members staying together under the same roof, you really can’t keep dogs and cats in the same area. Although sometimes I think they might behave themselves more.

I met up with some people from my direct employer today including our account team who passed out some nice duffel bags with the company logo on them.
While we were conversing at lunch I was outed as a parent when I used the word ‘jammies’. The guy that outed me said that you can always tell a parent by the words that they use. He then confessed that not long ago he was on a conference call and announced that he would be back in a minute as he had to go use the ‘potty’.
